Introduction
Dominy Irving, DIY and colourful interiors content creator, shares her home with her husband and two daughters just outside of Cambridge. Following her first pregnancy, she began her career in interior design, focusing on home projects, and launched a small business creating children’s décor.
This has since evolved to her becoming a full-time content creator, sharing her DIY projects and vibrant room transformations on her social media channels. Her interiors have a signature approach rooted in bold colour, playful design and layered patterns inspired by children’s spaces. This style is now carried throughout her entire home, with every room telling a different story.
Adding colour and personality to the outside

Dominy and her husband moved into the 1970s semi-detached house following the birth of their first child eight years ago. While the location was ideal, it required a full renovation.
From the outside, the property looks simple and understated with a dark brick exterior and minimal architectural features, but the inside is where the home’s personality really comes to life.
Dominy wanted to bring the exterior up to speed with the interior. She identified the front door as one of the key things that needed changing to transform the front of their home.
“The existing door was very dated,” explains Dominy. “It had patterned glass and just didn’t fit with our home’s style. It was also extremely draughty, so the letterbox rattled in the wind.”
A door that makes a statement

Dominy was focused on security and comfort when choosing her new front door.
“We have two young children, so security was my number one priority. I wanted a door that felt secure but was still easy to use day-to-day.
She also wanted the style and colour of the door to reflect the interior aesthetic of her home. “I also wanted a door that matched the updated Anthracite Grey windows and a colour that worked well with the dark brick exterior, while still reflecting our bold interiors”.
Her final choice was a Flint 2 in Copper Flame, one of Solidor’s latest additions to its colour range.
“It was a tough decision between Deep Merlot and Copper Flame, but in the end, we chose Copper Flame as we wanted a colour that would not only stand out but also match our interior style. The kitchen cabinets and the front door are almost an exact colour match”.
The Flint 2 door design features a glass panel, which Dominy has complemented with a full-length satin side panel to maximise light coming into the home.
“Our home is open plan, so the natural light is important. The glazing works really well, you can walk in and see straight through to the garden, and the light flows all the way through the house.”
A smooth and simple installation

GAP Home Improvements supplied and installed Dominy’s new door. As part of this process, they carried out an initial consultation to measure up and help Dominy select the right style for her home.
“They made the entire process simple and straightforward from start to finish. The consultation and survey were really helpful for getting the right advice.”
Dominy explains, “It was so quick. I dropped the kids off at school, walked the dog, and by the time I got back, we had a brand-new front door.”
The big reveal

When the installation was complete, Dominy waited to reveal the new door to her daughters after school. They walked in and just said, “Wow, it’s so modern”.
The door has quickly become a recognisable feature in the neighbourhood. “We’ve become the house with the orange door,” adds Dominy.
“The one thing that stood out to me about Solidor is the range of design and colour options available. Compared to other companies, the choice felt much broader and more expressive.”
As a visual person, Dominy also found the Door Designer tool especially helpful, allowing her to explore different styles and make decisions with confidence.
